After the heroic Nephalem cast down the Lord of Terror, the fallen angel Tyrael recovers the Black Soulstone, which now imprisons the essence of all seven Great Evils. Deeming it too dangerous for mortal or angelic hands, he and a company of Horadrim set out to hide it away forever within an ancient tomb. But they are ambushed by Malthael, once the Archangel of Wisdom, who vanished long ago and has returned transformed into the merciless Angel of Death. Slaughtering the Horadrim and seizing the Soulstone for his own dark design, Malthael descends upon the doomed city of Westmarch with an army of soul-reaping spirits.
